CNA Training (Certified Nursing Assistant)
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program provided by NHP prepares the student for California Certification as a CNA. It is designed to provide the student with nursing theory, laboratory and clinical experience necessary to work as a CNA in a variety of health care settings. Instruction will be held at NHP and the clinical component will be held at community-based skilled nursing facilities.
Certified Nursing Assistants are health care professionals who work in a variety of health care settings. Job responsibilities include assisting with personal hygiene and grooming (for example, bathing, dressing, nail care), mobility (transferring, positioning, ambulation), nutritional and elimination needs (feeding, bedpans, emptying urine collection bags), comfort activities (back rubs, answering call lights, maintaining privacy), assessment and care planning (vital signs, collecting specimens, recording and reporting observations), safety and environmental cleanliness (keeping environment clean, maintaining infection control, caring for equipment), and miscellaneous tasks (transporting residents, delivering specimens, assisting with special procedures).
On completion of this course, the student meets California requirements to take the State Certification Exam for CNA’s. Basic nursing theory and skills are taught in the classroom and laboratory setting, and students are supervised in giving care to residents in the long-term care facility (nursing home). The focus of this course is on the care of the elderly resident. Course content follows the California State approved CNA curriculum.
CNA CLASS DESCRIPTION
This is a 160-hour class for students who wish to work in an acute care or convalescent hospital, or a home care environment. Successful completion of the program will make students eligible to take the state certification exam, administered by a state-approved testing vendor. Upon passing the exam, students will be credentialed as a Certified Nurse Assistant by the California Department of Health Services.
Certified Nursing Asst/Home Health Aide (CNA/HHA)
The philosophy of The Certified Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide (CNA/HHA) Program is consistent with The Certified Nurse Assistant and Assessment Program (NATAP) Model Curriculum. The CNA NATAP Model Curriculum was originally published in 1994 and provides guidance to CNA training programs. The NATAP curriculum contains a statement of philosophy, which is “to promote quality of patient care; to provide entry-level skills for employment as a CNA and to provide awareness of opportunities/choices in health care occupations.
The CNA curriculum is based upon the following beliefs Individuals have the right to optimum health care delivered in a safe environment by a competent caregiver.Learning occurs in an atmosphere of mutual respect; where questioning is welcomed, problem solving is encouraged, and opportunities for guided practice exist. The CNA is an important member of the health care team.
The CNA, under the direct supervision of licensed nursing personnel, provided direct care to the resident; promotes comfort measures, and collects, records and reports data. Individuals have the right to the fulfillment of their basic physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs.” The major concept on which CNA/HHA curriculum is based follows Maslow’s Theory of Basic Human Needs. The premise of this theory is that all humans have needs that must be met for survival. These needs are arranged in a hierarchy so that as lower level needs are met, higher level needs emerge. These needs starting from lower to higher level needs include physical, safety and security, love and belonging, self-esteem and self-actualization.
Taking into account the above needs, the CNA/HHA Program recognizes individuals as bio-psycho-spiritual beings. Principles from the program are taken from the physical, biological and behavioral sciences and woven into the curriculum. The NATAP Model Curriculum also focuses on underlying concepts, which are called the Six Principles of Care. These concepts are privacy, infection control, communication, safety, independence and dignity. The importance of the CNA in adhering to all six concepts when they are taking care of residents is stressed throughout the entire curriculum.
HOME HEALTH AIDE
This is a 40 hour class for Certified Nurse Assistants who wish to obtain the Certified Home Health Aide credential to work in an acute care or convalescent hospital, or a home care environment. Upon successful completion of the program, students become eligible for designation as a Certified Home Health Aide by the California Department of Health Services.
BLS Healthcare Provider (BLS)
The Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider Course is a 4 hour course designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. The course is intended for certified or noncertified, licensed or non-licensed healthcare professionals.
Intended Audience: Healthcare providers such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, physician’s assistants, residents or fellows, or medical or nursing students in training, aides, medical or nursing assistants, police officers, and other allied health personnel.

Heartsaver CPR
The Heartsaver CPR course is a 4 hour course designed to meet the needs of the general public and to provide up-to-date comprehensive training in Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and Choking. Students also learn how to operate a public access Automated External Defibrillation (AED).
Note: This CPR class will NOT meet the requirements for the Healthcare Professional (nurses, doctors, EMTs, or Paramedics or those who are getting a job in the healthcare field). Those who work or want to work in the medical field need the Healthcare Provider (BLS) CPR course.

American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) First Aid
Individuals who require or desire elementary first aid knowledge and skills; including emergency responses teams in business and industry, school bus drivers, adult residential care personnel, child care workers, teachers, parents, and babysitters.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) need 48 hours of CEUs per 2 year renewal period. Only 24 hours can be taken on-line; the remaining 24 hours must be taken in a classroom. In addition to the CEUs, a CNA must work at least 8 hours in the 2 year period.
(The 8 hours must be in a facility and NOT in someone’s home.) Cost: $60.00
Restorative Nurse Assistant Training Program
Earn 8 CEU’s! Certified Restorative Nurse Assistants are specially trained CNA’s who provide ongoing long-term physical and occupational care to improve patient’s quality of life – physically, mentally and emotionally. This course provides CNA’s with the skills for a fulfilling career in a long-term care facility, rehabilitation skilled nursing facility, or in a home health environment.
